v1.7.7 Latest

🌐 UI and Accessibility Improvements

Features

  • Custom Controls: Change any keyboard shortcut in Settings > Controls, or use the middle, right, back and forward mouse buttons instead. Each action can have up to two shortcuts and are synced between devices, search finds actions or keys, and single actions or all of them can be reset.

Improvements

  • Reset Map Rotation: Press N to turn the world map back to north.
  • Store Quantity Controls: Added a Min button to paint charge and max charge purchases to instantly reset the quantity to 1.
  • Redesigned Tooltips: Tooltips now match the game interface style. Icon buttons display helpful descriptions, truncated text is revealed on hover, and the minimized paint bar now shows keyboard shortcuts in its tooltips.
  • Pixel Store Cards: Frame, font, and text style cards in the store have a new pixel look. Each rarity has its own border, badge, and glow.

Fixes

  • Removed button backgrounds behind profile pictures in leaderboards and alliance member lists.
  • Fixed an invisible area beside the title bar in full-screen alliance canvases that prevented painting, dragging, and other interactions.
  • Added missing translations for alliance overlay positioning tips.
  • Fixed player profile frames overlapping the country selector on the leaderboard.
  • Fixed a brief flash of light mode when opening pages with dark mode enabled.
  • Fixed tooltips being clipped by dialogs, panels, scrollable lists, and profile item grids.
  • Fixed Ctrl+Shift+Z undoing instead of redoing in alliance Headquarters.

🎨 Compact Paint Palette

Additions

  • Alliances can now hide the outline around their picture on profiles and cards from alliance settings.
  • The pixel editor now supports collapsible layer folders and actions on multiple selected layers, including duplicate, rename, transform, hide, lock, reorder, delete, and merge. Right-click layers for these actions, or use Ctrl+E to merge, Shift+T to transform, Ctrl+G to group, and Ctrl+J to duplicate. Select nontransparent layer pixels from the menu or with Ctrl-click on a layer thumbnail. Folders are saved with your work, and layer changes support undo and redo.
  • Alliance members can now create, import, and edit private overlays in the HQ canvas, with the same Google Drive sync as world-map overlays.

Improvements

  • World-map overlay progress checks now use less memory, skip empty overlay areas, and reuse work for unchanged map tiles. Large libraries start checking progress before all thumbnails finish loading and keep results when cached images are reloaded.
  • Overlay placement now includes an opacity slider, making it easier to align images with existing drawings on the world map and alliance canvases.
  • The favorite places button no longer displays a counter.
  • The store button now stays available while painting, including with an overlay open, so you can refill charges without leaving paint mode. You can hide it while painting in Show store button while painting.
  • Favorite places can now be moved by choosing a new position on the map.
  • Desktop paint panels now place the Paint button beside the colors, with the eraser and palette toggle in the toolbar, leaving more room for the canvas. Minimized panels now use a compact bar with the selected color, pixel count, quick tools, available charges, and an expand button.
  • Each overlay now remembers its last map position and zoom level when you reopen it to paint. If that view would leave the overlay off-screen, the map fits the overlay into view instead.

Fixes

  • Links to settings and other controls now keep their destination highlighted when opened in the same tab.
  • Confirmed drawings now stay visible while the world map loads the updated pixels.
  • Support cases now show "Waiting for you" after support replies, making it clear when your response is needed.
  • The information button no longer moves down when the zoom-in prompt has enough room beside it.
  • Painting with an overlay is more responsive during continuous strokes.
  • Fast swipes on a locked mobile canvas no longer trigger browser gestures that interrupt painting.
  • Mobile overlay controls now use the same button size and icon colors as the main canvas.
  • New favorite places now default to a filled yellow star with a transparent background.
  • The reduced paint palette keeps the last selected premium color before black and hides transparency while that color is pinned, preventing an extra row of colors. Transparency remains available in the expanded palette.
  • Toolbar and dialog buttons now have visible frames in the pixel interface, including the color picker, crosshair, opacity, undo, redo, and minimize controls.

πŸ† Leaderboard Filters & Alliance Activity Improvements

Improvements

  • Improved update notifications with a longer patch notes preview and a Read More button to view the full changelog.

  • Creating "Something else", "Dismissed ticket review", and "Denied Appeal review" support cases is temporarily disabled for improvements and maintenance. These options will be back soon. Existing cases remain available.

  • Fixed pixel editor tool button spacing and alignment on desktop and mobile.
  • Fixed off-center icons in the pixel editor's zoom buttons.
  • Reduced lag when zooming and panning the headquarters canvas with the pixel grid enabled.
  • Alliance names with disallowed characters or words now show the correct error instead of "name already taken". Rename errors stay visible beside the name field.

Fixes

  • Fixed thin background-colored seams appearing inside the filled trophy icon for favorite places.
  • Selecting a favorite preset now disables transparent backgrounds and correctly applies the preset's background color.

  • On small phones, paint tools have larger touch targets, long labels fit within the panel, and the Paint button no longer crowds the buttons beside it. The color palette scrolls on short screens to keep every color within reach.

Fixes

  • Removed extra space below game panels when mobile browser bars already provide bottom spacing.
  • Fixed the Pixel-art Studio view shifting when the canvas resizes after lifting your fingers at the end of a pinch zoom.

🎨 Studio Controls and Event Wrap-up

  • Fixed overlays appearing shifted by one pixel on the canvas even when progress showed 100% complete.
  • Fixed overlay galleries getting stuck loading when a browser image decoder stops responding. Previews now fall back to another decoder and release stalled resources.
  • Fixed blocked or interrupted local storage access leaving overlay previews loading indefinitely.
  • Fixed overlay colors changing between devices with different graphics memory limits. Zoomed-out overlays now retain template colors instead of blending neighboring pixels into new colors.
  • Fixed JPEG and WebP overlays with embedded color profiles importing with different colors depending on browser decoding support.

  • Headquarters and draft placements now support exact coordinates, dimensions, undo, and redo.
  • Added a saved "Show palette numbers" option in overlay More tools for the main and alliance palettes.

Fixes

  • Fixed editor controls being covered by transform handles or the minimap on small screens and touch devices.
  • Fixed overlay colors changing in some browsers when saving or restoring editor layers and drafts, or importing PNG layers.
  • Fixed incorrect and unpainted overlay markers flickering during continuous painting or spreading onto completed pixels on devices with limited graphics memory.
  • Overlay progress and markers now wait for matching results after moving an overlay or changing its image or color settings.
  • Fixed pinch zoom jumping in the overlay editor when lifting or replacing a finger.
  • Fixed screen lock taps being ignored or toggling twice while painting.
  • Fixed overlays appearing shifted by one pixel despite showing complete progress.
  • Zoomed-out overlays retain their original colors across graphics memory limits, and profiled JPEG and WebP imports use consistent color handling.
  • Fixed overlay previews getting stuck when image decoding or local storage fails.
  • Headquarters overlays recover from graphics initialization failures and context loss.
  • Conflicting alliance artwork saves keep your editor draft available to review newer changes.

πŸ› οΈ Alliance Award Eligibility

Fixes

  • Discord moderators and leaders now count as eligible alliance members for membership awards.

πŸ–ΌοΈ Overlay Studio Reliability and Imports

Improvements

  • PSD and OpenRaster Import: Upload Photoshop (.psd) and OpenRaster (.ora) projects directly from the Overlay Gallery, drag and drop or import them through the New menu into the gallery, or import their layers into an existing editor project.
  • Layered Project Support: Imported raster projects preserve layer names, order, position, visibility, and opacity. Groups are unpacked into editable layers, and projects remain layered after saving and reopening.
  • Import Compatibility: Projects using unsupported masks, effects, or blending modes fall back to their merged image with a notice after import. PSD import supports 8-bit RGB and grayscale files.
  • Overlay Export: Export overlays as transparent PNG images, white-background JPEG images, OpenRaster projects, or Photoshop projects. Project exports preserve editable layers when available.
  • Wplace Palette Conversion: Imported artwork is automatically converted to the Wplace palette using the editor's existing transparency rules. Layer opacity remains a visual tracing aid and does not alter saved pixel colors.
  • Compact Paint Toolbar: The progress and opacity controls now take up less space, leaving more of the canvas visible. Detailed pixel statistics remain available under More tools.
  • Customizable Paint HUD: Added separate Show progress panel and Show opacity control options under More tools. These preferences are remembered across reloads and overlay changes.

Fixes

  • Fixed extra empty space below the paint palette on mobile.
  • Improved the mobile screen lock placement and fixed cases where it could fail to unlock while painting.
  • The palette toggle now remains accessible when the mobile paint menu is collapsed.
  • Fixed headquarters overlays sometimes failing to load after switching overlays or changing preview settings.
  • Fixed missing gallery thumbnails and detail previews after image memory cleanup.
  • Fixed a progress refresh race that could show outdated pixels as incorrect.
  • Saved overlay projects now reliably preserve layers, order, names, visibility, opacity, and locks after reloads or cache cleanup.
  • Duplicating a template now also copies its editor layers, keeping the duplicate fully editable.
  • Fixed an issue where users with previous web-store purchases could not delete their accounts.

πŸ–ΌοΈ Layer Opacity & Overlay Peek

Improvements

  • Overlay Studio now has customizable keyboard shortcuts for tools, brush size, and selected-layer visibility. Open Keyboard shortcuts in the sidebar to rebind or reset them; settings are saved in your browser.
  • Every pixel-art editor tool now has a default shortcut, including circle brush (C), filled polygon (P), rectangle (R), ellipse (O), Bezier curve (Q), move (M), box select (S), contiguous select (W), select by color (K), and lasso select (A). Hover over a tool to see its shortcut; selection shortcuts can also be customized in the right sidebar.
  • Added line, rectangle, ellipse tools and cubic Bezier curves with two control points.
  • Added box, contiguous, color, and lasso selection tools to the overlay editor. Selections constrain painting and filling, with controls to clear the selection or delete selected pixels.
  • Pixel editor layers can now be dragged into order and have individual opacity controls, making it easier to trace or recolor artwork against visible reference layers without changing the saved pixel colors.

Fixes

  • Fixed overlay colors changing after memory cleanup and restored color sampling for resized overlays using legacy colors.
  • Fixed right-click browser gestures in Opera leaving the paint tool stuck erasing pending pixels after navigation is canceled.
  • Template details now label the top-left pixel coordinates and let you view and edit them in the following format: tile X, tile Y, pixel X, pixel Y (for example, 343, 1941, 512, 589). Click the coordinates to set an exact position for placing and coordinating templates.
  • The screen lock button now stays accessible when the overlay paint menu is collapsed on mobile.
  • Overlay Gallery now remembers your selected sort option when you reopen it or reload the page.
  • The overlay peek shortcut now identifies the Option key on Mac while continuing to use Alt on other platforms.

πŸ› οΈ Overlay Reliability

Improvements

  • Selected-color filtering is now available directly from the top overlay toolbar, while pixel style options are grouped under More tools.
  • Overlay paint controls can now be collapsed into a single button on mobile, leaving more room for the map.

Fixes

  • Fixed collapsed mobile paint palettes enlarging colors instead of reducing the palette's footprint.
  • Fixed an issue where using Alt to peek beneath an overlay could open the browser menu bar.
  • Fixed an issue where browser privacy protections could cause correctly painted pixels to be highlighted as incorrect.

πŸ–ΌοΈ Overlay Studio

Improvements

  • New Overlay Gallery: Overlays are now organized in a responsive gallery with larger previews, painting progress, search, status and tag filters, sorting options, and a separate read-only alliance section.

  • New Overlay Creation: Create blank pixel-art projects with a custom name, resolution, and background, upload up to 10 images at once, or import an existing overlay. Uploaded overlays can be positioned later.

  • Overlay Details: Personal overlays now have a dedicated detail view where you can rename them, set their exact map position, manage tags, view resolution and progress, inspect remaining colors, duplicate, export, manage legacy colors, delete, place them on the map, and start painting.

  • Tags: Create reusable tags with selectable Wplace colors and assign them to personal overlays.

  • Redesigned Placement Tools: Resolution, scale presets, color matching, transforms, positioning, and save controls are now grouped into a cleaner responsive interface.

  • Improved Paint HUD: The overlay palette now shows remaining pixels per color. The map HUD displays completion, mismatches, unpainted pixels, pixel style, opacity, and inspection controls.

  • Pixel Inspection: Incorrect pixels appear as red X marks and missing pixels as gray question marks. You can also filter the overlay to show only pixels matching your selected paint color.

  • Per-Overlay Opacity: Each overlay now remembers its own opacity from 0% to 100% across all pixel styles.

  • Detailed Progress: Progress tools can show exact remaining pixel counts and percentages for every color.

  • Pixel Editor: Personal overlays can now be edited directly in Wplace with square and circle brushes, paint bucket, polygons, eraser, color picker, symmetry, palette controls, zoom, grid, undo, and redo.

  • Layers: Organize artwork into layers with previews, visibility, locking, renaming, duplication, reordering, deletion, image imports, and individual layer transforms.

  • Canvas Editing: Crop transparent borders, expand the canvas from any edge, move or resize artwork, flip overlays, and undo or redo these changes before saving.

  • Automatic Recovery: Unfinished pixel, layer, and canvas edits are locally saved automatically and restored when reopening the editor.

  • Safer Storage: If protected browser storage is unavailable and cloud sync is disabled, gallery shows a visible backup warning with an option to connect Google Drive.

  • Better Recovery: Active overlays can recover from graphics or background-processing failures without losing placement or unsaved editor changes.

πŸ› οΈ Paint Charge Reliability

Fixes

  • Paint charge balances no longer appear or remain negative after painting.

πŸ–ΌοΈ Alliance Overlays and Asset Studio

New features

  • Alliance headquarters now include a leaderboard of canvas contributions for today, this week, this month, and all time.
  • Alliance staff with overlay management permission can now use its edit dialog to place it independently on drafts, headquarters, and the main canvas.

Improvements

  • The alliance asset studio has a refreshed layout: drafts and saved versions appear as image cards on a transparency checkerboard, each draft's manage actions are grouped into a compact menu, a new draft can be bought directly from the drafts grid at its shown Coin price, and the equipped version can be unequipped right from its card.
  • Finishing an asset draft and removing a saved version now ask for confirmation first.
  • Styled letters with accents in alliance descriptions now display correctly on mobile devices.
  • Alliance overlays now use shared positions chosen by staff. Positioning opens the selected canvas directly, where staff can set its size and color options independently.
  • Alliance overlays use the same painting-guide flow on every canvas, including pixel guide modes and selected-color filtering.
  • Alliance overlays refresh after staff moves them, notify viewers about the new position, and reuse images securely after rechecking access. Existing overlays stay hidden until staff selects and positions their locations.

Fixes

🧭 Alliance Canvas Overlays

Additions

  • Shared alliance overlays:
    • Alliances can now centrally manage overlays that are available across picture, banner, headquarters, and main-canvas overlay galleries.
    • The central overlay editor includes a live preview with horizontal and vertical flipping plus precise, aspect-locked resizing.
    • Every overlay available to a member appears on every alliance canvas and in the main-canvas overlay gallery.
    • Overlay managers can share each overlay with all members, one or more alliance roles, or collaborators on one or more drafts.

  • The alliance Activity feed and alliance notifications now show new events promptly, even during very busy periods.

πŸ› οΈ Alliance Usability Fixes

  • Full-screen alliance canvases:
    • Picture, banner, and headquarters artwork can now fill the entire screen for better visibility.
    • Painting now uses the familiar main-canvas flow with an open-and-confirm Paint button and mouse-wheel-click color sampling.

  • Controlled member lists:
    • Alliance member and ban lists now load one additional page per Load more click instead of continuing automatically while you scroll.
  • Easier draft collaborators:
    • Managing who can paint an alliance draft now shows the full member list with a search box and a checkbox per member.
    • Ticking a member grants access instantly, unticking removes it, and current collaborators stay visible with the date they were added.

πŸ› οΈ Headquarters Preview Reliability

Improvements

  • Reliable public headquarters previews: Public headquarters previews now properly load during heavy alliance activity instead of remaining unavailable while background work catches up.
  • Better alliance browsing: Filter the gallery by open, request-based, or invite-only membership, while recently active alliances continue loading reliably as their order changes.
  • Timely alliance succession: Eligible active successors now take over promptly after a leader passes 60 days without painting, even when many alliances need leadership updates at once.
  • Flexible alliance roles: Alliances now include a Mod role without changing existing Admins, and leaders can tailor permissions for Admins, Mods, and Members.
  • Clear purchase history: The Alliance Coin ledger now names the store item bought in every purchase entry.
  • Complete headquarters timeout history: Revoked headquarters timeouts now show why painting access was restored.

πŸ›‘οΈ Alliance System Fixes

Additions

  • NEW FRAMES: A fresh collection of user frames is now available in the store!
  • Active alliance leadership: If a leader has not painted for more than 60 days, leadership now passes to the oldest active admin, then the oldest active member. Alliances without an active successor keep their current leader.
  • Faster member directories: Alliance member lists can now be searched by name or ID, filtered by role, and sorted. Staff can also filter members by account status and sort by painted pixels.

Improvements

  • Reliable headquarters previews: Headquarters preview images now recover automatically from temporary loading delays instead of remaining broken.
  • Stable headquarters canvas: Moving, zooming, and refreshing the headquarters canvas no longer produces false connection errors when an outdated tile request is cancelled, and holding Space to paint or pan no longer scrolls the dialog.
  • Readable alliance leaderboard on phones: The alliance leaderboard now fits the screen on mobile, so the pixel counts and the last pixel button are no longer cut off.

πŸ›‘οΈ The New Alliance System

πŸ†• Key Changes

Alliances have been completely rebuilt into a full community system with public profiles, shared progression, customization, collaborative canvases, headquarters, awards and new management tools.

  • Discover alliances: Explore the new Alliance Gallery, search for alliances and sort them by activity, members, painted pixels or creation date. Each alliance now has a detailed public profile with its picture, banner, description, members, awards, headquarters and Discord server. Alliance cards can also be previewed directly from pixels on the main canvas.
  • Manage your community: Alliance leaders can choose between Open, Request to Join and Invite Only membership policies. Create limited or expiring invite links, review join requests, promote members, assign admins, transfer leadership and remove or ban members. Alliances no longer have a member limit.
  • Earn and spend Alliance Coins: Alliances earn Coins when their members place valid pixels on the main canvas. Members can also donate Droplets to the alliance fund. A complete ledger shows how Coins were earned and spent, while only the leader can make purchases.
  • Alliance Store: Alliance Coins can be spent from one central store on renaming, description upgrades, premium palette colors, custom pictures and banners, additional drafts, headquarters access and headquarters upgrades.
  • Build a unique identity: Create a custom profile picture and banner pixel by pixel, publish a longer formatted description with Markdown tools and shortcuts, and add an optional Discord invite to the alliance profile.
  • Collaborative picture and banner studio: Leaders can create unlimited drafts, invite specific alliance members to help paint them and save multiple finished versions. Finished versions can be previewed, equipped or replaced at any time.
  • Full pixel editor: Alliance pictures, banners and headquarters use a dedicated editor with painting, erasing, color picking, undo, redo, panning, zooming, canvas fitting and an optional pixel grid. Shared drafts automatically receive changes made by other editors.
  • Alliance Headquarters: Claim a location on the world map and build on a separate shared alliance canvas. Headquarters can be expanded, displayed publicly or limited to members, and opened directly from the map or alliance profile. Public visitors can waanvas, while members can paint using a separate headquarters charge pool that does not affect main-canvas charges.
  • Headquarters upgrades: Leaders can increase the headquarters canvas size, raise every member's maximum HQ charges and reduce the charge regeneration cooldown.
  • Upgradable awards: Alliance achievements progress through Common, Uncommon, Rare, Epic, Legendary and Mythic tiers. Awards track milestones such as members, painted pixels, activity and alliance age. Leaders can feature up to three earned awards on the public profile.
  • Activity feed and notifications: Important alliance events now appear in a detailed activity feed, including membership changes, purchases, awards, profile updates and headquarters activity. Personal events such as join-request decisions, role changes, leadership transfers, removals and headquarters timeouts are delivered through direct notifications.
  • Alliance reporting and moderation: Players can report alliance names, descriptions, Discord invites, equipped artwork and headquarters content. Reports preserve the exact content that was reported and use the existing moderation system.

⚽ World Cup Predictions and Cosmetics & Anti-cheat Improvements

πŸ†• Key Changes

  • World Cup Event Match Predictions and Cosmetics: You can now earn an event currency called Cup Coins by painting daily in any stadium area or by getting the correct prediction. Spend your Cup Coins in the new Cup Store on exclusive time-limited rewards, such as country badges, frames, and other cosmetics, or exchange Droplets for coins if you want a head start.
  • Anti-cheat system improvements: More aggressive anticheat detections and punishment of bots and multi-accounts to keep the canvas fair.
  • Improvements to the suspension system: Suspensions are now more granular.

  • Fixed zoom behavior when clicking on hotspot clusters.
  • Reduced default zoom level when clicking on hotspots.

  • Various other small bug fixes

πŸ› οΈ Moderation Adjustments, Hotspots and Improved Anti-Cheat System

With v1.3.0, we’re reducing the moderation intervention and giving more freedom to the players to better match Wplace’s core idea: a living canvas shaped by the community.

Our previous rules left too much room for interpretation, which led to inconsistent moderation and caused players to be more hesitant to paint on the map. We’re now moving to a more hands-off approach, where the community has more control over the map, and we only step in when truly necessary.

πŸ†• Key Changes

  • New Clear Rules, More Freedom: Clearer, more flexible rules supported by visual examples so everyone knows exactly what’s allowed or not.
  • New Moderation Policy: We will only intervene in clear and obvious cases of rule violations.
  • Griefing Redefined: Cleaning inappropriate or ambiguous content, spammy filler, or repetitive patterns is no longer griefing.
  • Enhanced Griefing Enforcement: Obvious griefing cases will be handle with more care, with penalties and rollbacks when needed.
  • Improved Anti-Cheat: New system to detect and prevent bots and multi-account to keep the game fair.
  • Hotspots: Map markers highlight the most active and contested regions.
  • Improved Cosmetics UI: More intuitive interface for browsing and equipping cosmetics.
  • New Avatar Frame: Black cat - Frame Contest Winning Frame - made by Yana

πŸ“œ New Rules

🚫 Prohibited
  1. Inappropriate Content: Explicit, hateful, or illegal content is not tolerated. More details
  2. Griefing: Destroying others' work with no creative intent. More details
  3. Multi-accounts & bots: One account per person. No automation or exploits.
βœ… Fair play
  1. Territorial disputes: Competing for space is part of the game. More details
  2. Map cleanup: Erasing spam, inappropriate or suggestive content with transparent pixels. More details

The moderation should only step in when a rule is clearly broken. Everything else is up to the community.

See you on the map.
